Fourth Street shopping

We are located near Berkeley's Fourth Street

Fourth Street is one of the most upscale shopping districts in Berkeley, and one of the most original in the Bay Area. You don't come here to buy things you need, you come here to buy things you want. Located just off Highway 80 and Berkeley's main thoroughfare, University Avenue, it draws well-heeled shoppers from all points of the compass. Don't be fooled into thinking it's just like any fancy shopping district anywhere, though; it could definitely exist only in Berkeley. It's an affluent, eclectic, café-society sort of place, where people wander about in clothing that ranges in style from Mall-D'ordinaire to Dreary but Noble and Simply Fourth Street.

Natura
Natura
Healthy sleep is vital to a healthy life, and we believe using natural materials is the best solution for ourselves and our planet. By using sustainable, earth-friendly manufacturing practices and materials, Natura is truly where nature meets nurture. It's not a trend - it's a way of life.
Ralph Rossdeutscher, CEO

Green Initiatives:

If you know Natura, you know they believe a healthy sleep starts with natural ingredients. But what you may not know is that they practice eco-logic in everything they do – from the plant to the office to how they reach out to there retailers.

These are just a few of the ways there protecting our planet.

Operations:

  • All lighting in the plant, office and outdoors have been switched out for energy efficient bulbs that require 55% less energy. All of the old bulbs were sent to a recycling plant instead of a landfill.
  • Ceilings in the plant were painted white to reflect light and reduce lighting usage.
  • Forklifts and tow motors are all battery operated to reduce emissions within the plant.
  • All thermostats are regulated electronically to maintain even temperatures throughout the week and reduce temperatures at night and on weekends.
  • All computers in the plant and offices are shut off every night.
  • All lights are turned off every night and on weekends.
  • All paper and cardboard in both the plant and offices are recycled.
  • All plastic packaging in the plant is recycled.
  • Printer cartridges are sent to a refurbishing facility where they are cleaned, refilled and resold.
  • In our Customer Service Department, we have moved a portion of our records to be entirely electronic and are making efforts to offer electronic options available to customers. Online ordering, electronic order confirmation and electronic proofing.
  • Refillable pens and pencils, non-toxic markers, natural soaps and cleaning supplies are used company wide.
  • Dry erase boards, projectors and company-wide teleconferencing used to reduce one-use materials in communications.
  • Recycled coffee filters and reusable coffee mugs and dishes are used by employees.
  • 10% of all profits donated to charities committed to improving lifestyles of the underprivileged.
  • Wood skids and excess fabrics are donated to charitable causes for reuse.

Products

  • Displays are made with interchangeable graphics.
  • The water-based glue we use on our beds is certified environmentally safe by Green Guard. And it's delivered through a gravity system that naturally pulls the glue down, so less energy needed in the manufacturing process.
  • In all of our printed packaging and business cards.
  • We use vegetable dyes.
  • We use biodegradable plastic.
  • We use recycled paper or cardboard or FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified paper.
  • Shredded latex – We invented the process to rescue latex ends, shred them and use for pillow cores. Less latex in landfills and when the pillows have finished their life cycle, they are quicker to biodegrade.
  • Wool – We are the only mattress/bedding manufacturer in North America to card our own wool, which cuts down on cross-contamination and transportation costs.
  • Foam products – Our foam products now contain 30% soy (instead of being 100% petroleum based).
  • All products – In everything we manufacture, there is a percentage of natural and/organic component.
  • Recycled water bottles – In our eco-green pillow, we use recycled water bottles for the core.
Organic Mattress Inc. (OMI)
Organic Mattress Inc. (OMI)

OMI is more than just America's leading manufacturer of organic mattresses and bedding. There also a full-circle environmental company committed to offering retailers and their customers the purest organic mattresses and organic bedroom products available.

No other organic mattress manufacturer can match OMI's purity assurances. And since OMI makes absolutely no conventional or chemical mattresses, there is no chance of toxic chemicals ever contaminating our mattresses or bedding as there is in a mixed-production facility.

All of OMI's OrganicPedic® products are produced in the first large-scale 100%-organic mattress factory in North America, built solely to manufacture organic products. There commitment to maintaining a chemical-free, smoke-free, and fragrance-free environment runs deep. Pillows, mattress pads, and other top-of-bed products are made in the cleanest sewing environment in the mattress industry. Of course, they don't make conventional or chemical products.

There exclusive ozone sanitation chamber gives their customers an added assurance of purity against potential contamination from molds, yeasts, and bacteria. They even sterilize the compressed air used in there factory so that pollens and outside contaminants are never forced into mattresses during normal manufacturing processes.

Not only are all there mattresses made in the USA, but they only purchase organic raw materials from American organic farmers and industries. Manufacturing there natural rubber cores in America also prevents the risk of contamination from the fumigation to which all ships coming into North American ports are exposed.

All mattresses meet the stringent criteria of the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI). GEI's mission is to boost public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air quality. OrganicPedic® mattresses are the first, and only, natural rubber mattresses to receive the coveted GEI certifications. OrganicPedic® mattresses are also the first organic mattresses to offer the opportunity to obtain LEED credits. There ability to participate in the LEED rating program is a direct result of the third-party emission testing and certification awarded to us by GEI.

OrganicPedic® mattresses meet all federal, state, and even Canadian flammability requirements organically. No chemical fire-retardant fills or barriers are used in there products. All mattresses were tested by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission in May 2008, and meet all flammability performance criteria under CPSC Statutes 1632 and 1633.

OMI is the first mattress factory in the United States to become a certified organic processor of fiber and textiles that meet the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS ensures the organic status of textiles (from harvesting of the raw materials through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling) in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.

American Leather
American Leather - Comfort Sleeper

Green Initiatives

American Leather is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council, a non-profit organization created to promote sustainable practices in the furniture industry. Here are other key ways in which we work everyday to make our products and our factory more environmentally friendly.

Frames

  • All wood used in our furniture is harvested from sustainable forests.
  • We recycle over two million pounds of leftover wood.
  • We also use recycled and scrap hardwood using an innovative technology to repurpose the wood. We recycle our wood, but not use recycled wood for frames
  • Our glues are chemical-free, water-based binders. We use water-based glue that doesn't contain or release volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Leather

  • All leather is dyed using water-based solvents and pigments.

Cushions

  • Our cushioning includes soy-based foam cushioning, which is fully recyclable and available in a wide assortment of firmness and densities.
  • To help prevent ozone layer damage, we use high- density and high-resiliency foam that's free of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

Factory

  • Our factory conserves energy with automatic light shut-offs and we encourage employees to recycle and to use non-disposable water cups and coffee cups instead of Styrofoam or paper products.
  • Our furniture is manufactured in Dallas, Texas. Since none of our products travel across an ocean, they can arrive faster and with a smaller carbon footprint than imported goods.
